READING AND PERFORMANCE BY OREGON NOVELIST JACOB YOUNG

From his book entitled, “There is a Place in the Throat that has No Voice, 8:0:8."

This is another in a series of concerts and public events to support the community and benefit Reality Kitchen Nonprofit, 245 Van Buren St. in Eugene, Oregon.

Jacob Young

Set far in the future, the “8:0:8” story follows the Compass- a family of visionary, thinkers, and leaders whose legacy has lasted the three ages of humanity. The current world holds a vast, uncharted wilderness. A new species of animal, in closer symbiosis with the air than earth, is manifesting in this peak ecosystem.

Carrying a strong visual element, the story was illustrated the preparation, manifest, and closure of a public art installation at the 2010 Midsummer’s Dream Festival in Ashland, Oregon.

Young (www.ritualtheater.org) graduated with an MFA in Creative Writing from Naropa University in 2010. Since then, he has worked to hone this first novel, publishing it in July of 2012.

Along with writing fiction, Young has a diverse background in theater. His current theater project, to be presenting in conjunction with this reading, is a self-designed form called, “Performance Based Fiction.” Young organically draws from his writing, developing partially-improvised stories for a live audience. Using three dimensional space and objects as puppets, the visible author becomes an integral part in the laboratory of his fiction.

The show’s opening act will be local innovative musician, Samuel Ferris Harmon.

A Letter from Jim Evangelista regarding this event:

With the close of this year, we here at The Kitchen have much to be grateful for and want to take this opportunity to thank you for all your many supports and participation in our growth, mission and goals as well as share our hopes and wish list for this upcoming year.  (Please join us for a Potluck Dinner/Acoustic Reality Open Mic Holiday Gathering Monday, Dec 17@ 6:30 pm,

In this past year we completed the construction of our kitchen and acquired our Health Department certification, we’ve implemented our curriculum and launched our food service program. During this year we’ve hosted numerous and diverse public gatherings including: Occupy Eugene, IWW Lane County, Eugene SLEEPS, Banned Books and First Nations Awareness. Our musical events have included local and traveling performers of all genres, Karaoke Nights for our students, Acoustic Reality (Open Mic Nights) and Community Sing Alongs and featured guest speakers ranging from local County Commissioner Pete Sorenson on the railroad’s impact on neighborhood health and well being, “Take Back The Land” Executive Director Max Rameaux speaking on Housing and Homelessness recorded for NPR’s “Alternative Radio” broadcast, and Project ReConomy’s Nancy Koerber leading a workshop on foreclosure issues. Our movies have spanned the topics of Native American concerns, labor and union rights, autism and even some cartoons and fun flicks for kids of all ages. We celebrated Woody Guthrie’s 100th birthday anniversary in style with a block party and fundraiser for labor/folk singer Anne Feeney with local and national folk artists, including living legend Larry Penn, who’s travel was sponsored generously by Amtrak Railways.

Reality Kitchen Food Service Training Program.   Also known as the “Transition Graduate Program,” the food service training program provides an opportunity for youth with special needs and aged 21 or older to learn kitchen skills that will allow them to find entry- or mid-level jobs in a variety of food service settings.  The program introduces participants to the full range of duties associated with working in a professional kitchen, all the while making adaptations to meet each learner’s skill set and learning style.  Specially designed materials are available for student-clients who cannot read.   Upon successful completion, participants can earn the “Food Safe Certificate” (awarded by Oregon Department of Health Services) that is required for all who work in the state’s food service industry.

Areas covered in the program are:
1)    Food Safety and Sanitation (including working towards obtaining a food safe card from ODHS)
2)   Identification and use of kitchen equipment
3)   Identification and use of basic measurements
4)   Reading recipes and following check lists
5)   Cooking, baking and basic preparation methods
6)   Food presentation
7)   Developing interpersonal communication skills needed when serving the public, as well as learning to communicate effectively with co-workers
8)   How to clean a commercial kitchen using correct cleaning agents, cleaning tools and effective cleaning methods
9)   Recycling and composting

The program operates as a fully functioning deli-style café that is open for service to the public.  Student-clients learn the program curriculum as well as get daily hands-on experience by planning and preparing the menu as well as practicing what they are learning by serving healthy, nutritious food to customers that stop in at Reality Kitchen.

Further opportunities to use their kitchen skills and add to their work experience are available to student-clients who volunteer at some of the special events and regular evening programming that takes place at Reality Kitchen.

Other components of the Food Service Training Program include:  field trips to small local farms, restaurants, food suppliers and other potential places of employment; access to computers for students to work towards their food safe card and other program related activities; and presentation of a “Reality Kitchen” apron to use throughout the program and to keep at its conclusion.

For the work we do and commitment we have to our Mission Statement, we have received a number very kind and generous smaller donations and grants that have helped pay our rent and our utilities and funded our student food service program, as well as improvements to our performance venue and website development. Through the fiscal sponsorship of the Community Alliance of Lane County we have been able to offer tax-deductible status to our donors and prepare for our own 501(c)(3) designation and provider status with the State of Oregon.

Thanks to a significant grant from the Oregon Community Foundation we have been able to complete our IRS documentation, pay some legal and bookkeeper bills and now we are awaiting the word that we are a “stand alone” nonprofit organization. In no small part, our Board of Directors deserves credit for helping shepherd us along through this growth and want to acknowledge them for all they do.

The road ahead for us is equally as ambitious and vibrant and another reason for this holiday greeting.

·       We look forward to continuing the expansion and development of our Transition Graduate Program with an expanding menu offering and developing relationship with Lane Educational Service District’s Cookie Company (more on that soon!).

·       An upcoming partnership with Food For Lane County will help our student run and staffed Food Cart for area homeless and Unhoused neighbors and residents and acquisition of our State of Oregon Provider Status and Lane County DDS Vendor designation will put us on track to work steadily with brokerages and other organizations serving young adults with developmental disabilities, all vital to our revenue stream.

·       We have begun editing the recordings we’ve made of most of the performances and events we’ve held here to present them on our own radio show to be broadcast locally. The hope is we can put together the equipment here at Reality Kitchen to begin a low power radio station and offer our participating students the opportunity to broadcast and learn radio skills. Along with this goal, a “Story Corps” style project has begun as we collect conversations with families of those with developmental disabilities and broadcast these segments, along with commentaries and essays by our students.

·       As a result of the neighborhood newspaper delivery our students have been doing, we have made plans to begin publishing our own monthly newspaper focusing on topics of community interest with editorials and commentaries, art and poetry by those with and without developmental disabilities.

To be sure these and other goals “come to reality” we’ll need your continued and ongoing support, because like any other “castle in the sky,” it can’t stand long without foundations that are grounded and built on a strong base. Having said that, our New Year’s Wish List includes:

·       We desperately need a covering for our front patio to allow us to make better use of our rented space for outdoor gathering and shelter from the rain. This is budgeted at $2,500.00.

·      *  A proper heating system in this building is imperative if we are to keep folks coming to all the events, activities and gatherings we hold here at Reality Kitchen. This is budgeted at $3,500.00.

·      *  We recently acquired an illuminated reader board sign and we need some hardware, changeable letters and new bulbs to have it up and telling everyone we’re here and what we’re up to. This is budgeted at $1,000.00.

·       * We’d really like to begin roasting our own coffee here on site and making it an essential component of our Transition Graduate Food Service Program. Of the roasters we’ve investigated, Dietrich makes the best and would allow us to teach roasting, sell our own brand of coffee at the Kitchen and put out a product in stores and other coffee selling businesses that will make our bottom line work out. A new Dietrich 5 kilogram roaster comes at a cost of $ 20,000.00. This would really be a “Santa Special”!

With all that said, I want to thank you again for taking the time to read this, for making Reality Kitchen a part of your giving considerations and attending and being part of what keeps us here in the Whiteaker ! Please visit our website all year round for updates on how and what we’re doing, information on upcoming events and, importantly where you can contribute. Blessings and Peace this holiday season and throughout the New Year ahead!

Warmly,

Jim Evangelista
Executive Director

George Mann sings songs from the last century of labor

What: George Mann sings songs from the last century of labor and social activism, and his own songs are powerful and funny takes on the state of the nation. His concerts are part sing- along, part history lesson, and he can make you shout for joy, send chills down your spine or bring tears to your eyes in the same set.

George created and produced the “Hail to the Thief!” anti-Bush CD series, which featured such folk legends as Tom Paxton, Utah Phillips, Billy Bragg and Magpie, and his work with veterans, unions and anti-war groups has kept him on the front lines for 20 years.

In 2010, he produced a compilation CD, “Until You Come Home: Songs for Veterans and their Kin” and his solo CD, “Songs for Jules and Bruce.” George returns with “Patience in These Times,” a powerful new CD with 13 songs of courage, struggle and triumph. John and Mary Sims are city-dwellers hit hard by the financial fist of The Depression.

Driven by bravery (and sheer despression) they flee to the country and, with the help of other workers, set up a farming community - a socialist mini-society. The newborn community suffers manyhardships - drough, vicious raccoons and the long arm of the law - but ultimately pull together to reach a bread-based Utopia.

If you've been missing this kind of fun, (or you could use some more of it in your life), join us for a Sing-Along on Friday, September 7 at Reality Kitchen. Folksinger Chico Schwall will lead songs for all ages, drawing on years of singing folk song and leading adult and kids' choirs. It's inclusive, free and fun.

There's no set repertoire and no real agenda. Bring "Rise Up Singing," or a song to share, requests or just your voice. Bring the kids and sing together.

The Community Sing-Along is part of Reality Kitchen's community building mission and will happen the first Friday of each month at the same location.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Tonight at 7pm-10pm
Wednesday - June, 27th, 2012

WHO: Jared Paul / performance poet

WHERE: The Reality Kitchen, 245 Van Buren Street, Eugene, 97402.

ETC.: Jared Paul Bio: As a Performance Poet... Having toured internationally in over 200 cities throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe alongside legendary poets, musicians, journalists, and speakers such as Amy Goodman, Saul Williams, Bill Clinton, Sage Francis, Raine Maida (of Our Lady Peace), Paul Hawken, Jello Biafra, Immortal Technique, Anti-Flag, The Misfits and many others, Jared is widely recognized as one of the premiere performance poets in the world. His work has been featured on the Canadian Broadcast Company program, "Zed TV," as well as in CMJ Magazine and The Providence Journal. Jared is a two time Individual World Poetry Slam Finalist and was a featured poet at the Greenbuild 2007 International Conference & Expo. He was a guest performer for the Post Secret national book tour, and the headlining act for the 2009 Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach grand opening at the nationally acclaimed Villa Stuck gallery in Munich, Germany.

"Jared Paul is a stunning performer – staring audiences in the eyes and calling for conscious responses to injustice. His talent at sharing complex ideas through verse should not be missed." -The Eureka Times Standard.

As An Activist...
With over a decade of anti-war/animal rights/environmental protection organizing and a storied career laden with protest arrests, Jared Paul has become somewhat of a modern folk hero within the underground American counter-culture. His most notable run-in with the law happened during the 2008 Republican National Convention, where Jared was the victim of a mass arbitrary arrest. Fans and supporters jumped to action, creating a fundraiser via www.ConspiracyToRiot.com, from which an attorney was hired and the case was eventually dropped. His "Conspiracy To Riot" creative non-fiction series was published by the quarterly Providence periodical "The Agenda" and Strange Famous Records.

"Jared Paul is a firestorm of conviction and flow. In a world long on words and short on action, Jared delivers both." -Peter Young, nationally renowned animal rights organizer and advocate for social justice.

"If the United Nations needed a representative from the Slam/poetry community, we'd send them Jared." -Buddy Wakefield, 2004 & 2005 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion, 2005 European Slam Champion

"Emerson said that character is higher than intellect. What happens when someone has both character and intellect, as well as a sense of conviction that can be described only as humbling? You have made Jared Paul's acquaintance." -Columbia Recording Artist, Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace

As An Educator...
Jared is an artist in residence at AS220, the award winning Rhode Island arts collective dedicated to providing unjuried spaces for local and national artists since 1985. He is the founder and an 8 time coach of the Providence National Youth Poetry Slam Team, assisting and encouraging Rhode Island youth to seize the reins of performance art since 2001. Under Jared's direction Team Providence advanced to finals stage at The Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Festival in 2004, 2006 and 2007. Jared has facilitated performance poetry and direct action workshops at festivals, conferences, universities, prep schools, youth correctional facilities, public schools, and writer's groups across America.

"The only thing stronger than Jared Paul's convictions is his ability to change yours with the craft of his language." -Sonya Renee, 2004 Individual National Poetry Slam Champion

"Jared Paul is a juggernaut who lives his politics. His work speaks to the political - which is his personal - that he lives with sincere conviction and integrity." -Michael Cirelli, Executive Director URBAN WORD NYC

"Jared Paul is the watchdog of poetry, a force not unlike a hurricane– a very skinny, loud, sweaty hurricane that wants you to know your life is worth everything and that this planet belongs to us all."
-Mike McGee, 2003 Individual National Poetry Slam Champ and 2006 Individual World Poetry Slam Champ

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

MAY 12, 2012

WHO: Andy Cohen, blues and roots scholar, jaw-dropping guitarist, purveyor of great old tunes and player of the Dolceola.

WHAT: An Evening with Andy Cohen: an intimate house-concert style show with an acknowledged roots music master.

WHEN: Saturday, May 12 at 7:30 pm.

WHERE: The Reality Kitchen, 245 Van Buren Street, Eugene, 97402.

ETC.: Admission at the door. Suggested donation $10; offer what you can. Proceeds keep the artist on the road and benefit the reality Kitchen.

Boston-born, now Memphis-based Andy Cohen will pass through Eugene en route from a concert tour in the Yukon (no kidding) to receiving a lifetime achievement award from the California Autoharp Gathering. Another stop on a long road that has taken him

Cohen played piano as a kid, added guitar as a teenager and before long discovered Big Bill Broonzy and never looked back. Over the years he has become an expert on the music of Reverend Gary Davis, run a coffeehouse, organized folk festivals, recorded numerous albums, played half a dozen instruments, some familiar, some, like the Dolceola and the Marx-ophone, more exotic and travelled tens of thousands of miles in his trusty Volvo. His most recent album is "Built Right On The Ground" (Earwig Records). He remains the traditional music conscience of the Folk Revival, an excellent raconteur and a jaw-dropping guitar player. He was last in Eugene two years ago, played at Tsunami books and tore the place up. If you've missed him, now's the time to catch up and if you've never heard him 'live', don't miss your chance.

"He belongs to the roll call of folk music's guitar virtuosos, to the great collective of its revivalist heroes and to the time-honored keepers of American song." --William Lee Ellis

Spread the word.

--------------------

Dear Friends,

I would like to invite you to come to Reality Kitchen this April (exact dates coming soon) to support another friend, Zach Childers as he puts on a demonstration of Cutco products.

Zach is a young man with Cerebral Palsy and a recent graduate of Sheldon High School. He is currently working with Cutco, a cutlery distribution company and approached us about his product line. He visited Reality Kitchen and we did purchase a few items because they were worth the money and items we needed. THERE IS NO EXPECTATION OR REQUIREMENT THAT YOU PURCHASE ANYTHING IF YOU CAN ATTEND THIS PRESENTATION.

Zach is working on his presentation skills and would benefit greatly from the opportunity to demonstrate his product line and personal presentation skills before a small group. I know it is short notice, but giving him our support seems the right thing to do. Please consider coming to this evening gathering for an hour; it would mean a great deal to him, and me, if you can be available to support his effort at achieving a meaningful life of independence. For many or you, it would also be an opportunity to vist Reality Kitchen for the first time and checking out our progress and growth. Open Mic every Monday and a new weekly schedule of activities will be posted on our website this week, as well !

Please feel free to call me if you have any questions at 541-337-1323 and please forward this email to any friend you think would be interested in this presentation.

In advance, thank you for your consideration, understanding and support of our friend, Zach !

Peace,

Jim Evangelista
